How to Cover a Niche in a Fireplace: Before and After

Ever since we first looked at this house and I saw the large niche above the fireplace, I knew it would have to go. I just couldn't imagine what in the world I would put in that niche. So I began searching on Pinterest for ideas of how we could deal with this corner fireplace with a nice. Today I'm sharing how we covered this fireplace niche to create an entirely new and updated look for our Great Room.

Fireplace Niche Before:

Here's a look at what the fireplace looked like when we first moved in. You can see the room is dark with sponged paint, the niche is actually about 5-6 feet tall inside . And the entire fireplace from top to bottom is about 15 feet tall. It's a really big niche.

Our finish carpenter removed the frame around the niche, framed in the niche, and covered the entire fireplace in my new design. And this was the end result:

I had our painters paint both the new niche covering and the fireplace mantle a satin, custom-mixed white that matches the trim finishes throughout our house. It's a soft white, with no blue undertones and no true yellow undertones which I love. I was concerned about painting the mantle white, but I love the way it draws the eye all the way up to the ceiling. It also helps the rocks within the fireplace pull a little more grey, which matches the Revere Pewter paint color on the wall a bit better.

To finish off the design I added a beautiful circle mirror with a silver frame from Homegoods. I added two distressed wood pillar candlesticks from Tuesday Morning, and I used some Silver Dollar Eucalyptus to add some greenery to the mantle. You can see how the design matches the room so much better now. And it brought an air of both casualness and sophistication to the space, which I love.

  2. Sometimes changing the design of the room is ideal. The niche did not match the room at all before, but it looks fantastic now. I believe the room feels better balanced with that area filled in. The stone is a nice addition as well. Most places are built as a blank slate for the residents to change to their liking.
